Pipelife supports Ireland's first retreat center for cystic fibrosis patients

13. December 2024 | 5 min read

The Julian Benson Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is building Ireland's first 'Home Away from Home' — a specialized treatment and care center for people living with cystic fibrosis and their families. Situated in the heart of Dublin, the upcoming facility will offer optimal conditions and treatment opportunities to enhance the quality of life for its residents. As a company dedicated to supporting innovative projects and social initiatives, Pipelife Ireland donated underfloor heating and hot and cold water supply systems necessary to ensure a healthy and comfortable living environment in the new care center.

A vision of care and comfort

The Julian Benson Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's groundbreaking project, Tranquility House, aims to offer free, high-quality accommodation for cystic fibrosis patients and their families during treatment. Set in a beautifully restored 160-year-old Georgian house, the pioneering care center combines world-class comfort and hygiene standards with architectural excellence.

The retrofitted building features work by some of Ireland's most renowned professionals, including renowned architect Dermot Bannon and award-winning landscape architect Peter Donegan. With four fully equipped two-bedroom apartment suites, complete with kitchens, dining spaces and living areas, Tranquility House will become a sanctuary of support, recovery and retreat for its residents.

21st century heating solution for a historic building

The renovation of the Tranquility House building began in early 2024, with commissioning planned for the end of the year. The project's final refurbishment tasks will be completed over a ten-day community initiative, bringing together hundreds of volunteers.

Retrofitting a 160-year-old house posed significant challenges, especially in implementing a modern heating solution while preserving the building's structural integrity. Hydronic underfloor heating was selected as the optimal solution for the care center. Such systems minimize dust and allergen circulation in the air and ensure consistent indoor temperatures without drafts or hot spots — critical factors in improving living conditions for patients diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.

Pipelife Ireland's engineering team devised a bespoke underfloor heating solution tailored to the specifics of the historic property. The system was designed to avoid raising floor levels on the upper floors and to address the increased heat loss typical to period houses while aligning with the project's goal of ensuring superior indoor air quality.

Collaboration at its best

The success of Tranquility House is a testament to the collaborative effort of dedicated professionals. Pipelife Ireland worked hand-in-hand with the installer Andy Gahan Plumbing & Heating, as well as civil engineering experts from Waterman Kelly Engineers. Their expertise and generosity in donating time and resources were instrumental in ensuring the project's timely completion.

Pipelife Ireland provided the complete underfloor heating solution for the center, including pipes, fittings, a heat pump and thermostatic controls.

In total, 2,008 meters of piping were installed to heat a surface area of 299.5 m². Additionally, Pipelife donated pipes and fittings for the hot and cold water distribution system throughout the building.

"As soon as we heard about Tranquility Home through our partners, we embraced the opportunity to contribute our solutions and expertise. It's an honor to be part of a project that will make a huge difference for people living with cystic fibrosis and their families," says Eoghan Considine, Specifications Manager at Pipelife Ireland.

The Tranquillity House project stands as a testament to the power of community, compassion and innovation. By combining thoughtful design, sustainable building solutions and engineering expertise, the center will transform the lives of cystic fibrosis patients, offering them a place to recover and heal.

Pipelife Ireland is proud to play a key role in this extraordinary initiative, delivering solutions that go beyond function to create a space of comfort and care for those who need it most.
